Got a problem with alcohol? Blame it on your parents!

Parents putting children on path to teenage drinking

Well guys, it looks like we can blame our parents for our drinking problems. You know that old “if we let our  kids have a few drinks at home, the’ll learn to drink responsibly’ myth? Well it looks like that myth may have just been busted out of the water!

SBS News reportS that the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre at UNSW followed nearly 2000 parent and child pairs over a series of four years, to observe young people’s drinking habits and try to get a clearer picture of what shapes them. And the results are quite intriguing.
“At age 12 and 13-years-old, close to one in six children in the study reported being given alcohol by their parents.

By 15 and 16-years of age more than a third of the sample was being supplied alcohol by their parents. Of that group, 15 per cent  were drinking full serves compared with only 1.5 per cent of the younger children.
By age 15 to 16-years, half of all children in the study were drinking alcohol and obtaining it from a variety of sources including parents, peers, older teens and other adults.

Children who were given alcohol by their parents were also more likely to be obtaining alcohol from these “non-sanctioned” sources as those whose parents did not supply alcohol.”

So there we have it. Next time one of your parents accuse you of having a drinking problem. Simply jump up and down on the spot pointing a finger at them while screaming “IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!”
Or perhaps take some responsibility for your own actions.
