You know you’re getting old when a film that came out in your high school years is getting a remake… or that Hollywood is really struggling to find anything original. I prefer to believe in the latter. According to Deadline Sony is reportedly fast tracking a remake of the 1997 hit I Know What You Did Last Summer with Oculus filmmakers Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard writing and directing.
I Know What You Did Last Summer was one one of the more notable slasher films that came out after Wes Craven’s Scream revitalised the genre in the 90’s. Yes it did have a pretty bad sequel with I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and then there was that direct to DVD sequel I Will Always Know What You Did Last Summer that pretty much killed the franchise. That movie was all kinds of bad. I remember when the credits were rolling I found myself thinking I would never get those 92 minutes of my life back.
Word is it’ll be one of those micro-budget horror movies that have been made popular by movies such as Paranormal Activity and The Purge, so I guess a remake of it would make a lot of financial sense for Sony. One can only wonder who will be our next Jennifer Love Hewitt. Lets just hope whoever they choose in the lead role doesn’t try to launch a music career at the same time.
Seriously, I don’t think I could deal with that.
Sony is aiming for a 2016 release. Are you looking forward to a remake or do you think Hollywood should just come up with something new?
