I was an 80’s baby and due to that fact my childhood memories of television was predominantly made up with Jim Henson programs. Sesame Street, The Storyteller, The Muppets and one of my favourites was Fraggle Rock. I spent countless hours enjoying the adventures of Red, Sprocket Mokey, Gob, Boober, Doc, Wembley, and the Doozers. God, I even stuck my head in a hole that I found in the ground hoping to see my very own Fraggle Rock, instead I got a face full of spiderwebs.
With The Muppets seeing a recent big screen revitalisation, it seems the natural progression would be that Fraggles would follow suit, and Variety reports that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be leading the project. He will be partnering with the Henson Company and New Regency to produce and star in a theatrical Fraggle Rock movie. *claps hands excitedly*
I think the idea of a movie has been bouncing around for years, but it looks like Levitt is determined in making it a reality, and he’s very excited to be doing so.
“The first screen personas I ever loved were Henson creations, first on ‘Sesame Street,’ and then on ‘Fraggle Rock,’” Gordon-Levitt said. “Jim Henson’s characters make you laugh and sing, but they’re also layered, surprising, and wise. From Oscar the Grouch, to Yoda, to the Fraggles. I’ve never stopped loving his work, even as a young frisky man, and on into adulthood. Collaborating with Lisa Henson makes me confident we can do something that Jim would have loved. I’m grateful and excited to be working with New Regency on this project.”
There is no confirmed date as to when the film will be heading into production, but I just ask this one thing, “Please don’t screw it up!”
I do have hopes though with Joseph Gordon-Levitt being involved. He doesn’t really do shit films so that’s good at least.
What do you guys think of a Fraggle Rock movie? Are you ready for the Fraggles to be introduced into a whole new generation?
