Laverne Cox named as first ever transgender figure at Madame Tussauds

Laverne Cox’s Madame Tussauds Wax Figure Will Be the First Transgender Figure in the Museum’s History

Orange Is The New Black star and transgender rights activist Laverne Cox is about to make history becoming the first ever transgender wax figure at the critically acclaimed Madame Tussauds in San Francisco. The museum announced on Monday that they would be unveiling the wax figure on June 26 during the Pride Weekend celebrations in the Bay Area. It is the first-ever transgender figure in the museum’s history.

Prior to Caitlyn Jenner breaking the internet by going public with her male-to-female transition, Cox was arguably the highest profile transgender celebrity in the United States breaking barriers in the entertainment industry, being the first openly transgender woman of colour to be nominated for an Emmy, appearing on the cover of Time magazine and featuring a story about how transgender woman and men were beginning to gain greater acceptance in society.

“When I think about being who I am, a black trans woman from a working class background raised in Mobile, Alabama, this honour feels even more improbable and extraordinary,” said Cox in a statement. “I hope that this will be a source of inspiration for every one for encounters it to believe that their dreams matter and are possible.”
Such great news, and to make things even more exciting Orange Is The New Black returns June 12!
