Back in October of last year, we heard rumours of a plan in the works that would see an adaptation of the the TV series Baywatch into a feature film with Dwayne The Rock Johnson as the lead. Well today we learn that plans for that film are still unfolding with the news that Zac Efron is now in negotiations to star in the movie.
Too be honest, this sounds like the perfect role for him. Baywatch is by no means a serious story and technically all Efron needs to do is to be able run on the beach wearing nothing but red swim trunks. As far as I’m concerned, he’d be a natural in that role.
Rumour has it, Efron will play a young renegade lifeguard who partners up with the older, more Hasselhoff-y Johnson to protect their beach from a nefarious oil magnate. Drama! Drama! Drama!
“Zac Efron is suiting up in red bathing trunks and hitting the beach. Efron is in negotiations to star opposite Dwayne Johnson in Paramount’s Baywatch, the big-screen take on the 1990s television series about California lifeguards. After years of development, the project seems to finally be ramping up and in recent weeks it added Seth Gordon as director. Efron’s casting sets the movie up for a production start in early 2016, likely in February. The story centers on a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon. Damian Shannon and Mark Swift wrote the most recent draft. Beau Flynn, collaborating with Johnson for the fourth time, and Ivan Reitman are producing. Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions will also produce in some capacity.”
To be honest, I find Zac Efron movies more of a miss than a hit. But he can do comedy and looks great shirtless, so considering plans are to make the Baywatch movie like 21 Jump Street, but at the beach, then it has a surprising good chance of success. Now the question everyone one is wondering, will there be a cameo by David Hasselhoff?
